Vanessa Hau Mdee was born on 7 June 1988 in Arusha, Tanzania to Sammy Mdee and Sophia Mdee. Her father was a journalist and diplomat and as a result, grew up in different cities across the world, Arusha, Nairobi, and Paris. Vanessa Mdee has two siblings, Nancy Namtero Tero Mdee and Marianne Namshali MdeeMimi Mars.

Schooling

Vanessa Mdee did her secondary education at the Arusha Modern High School before she moved to Nairobi to study Law at the Catholic University of East Africa.

Music

Vanessa Mdee’s music career kicked off in 2012 with the release of ‘Me and You’ alongside Ommy Dimpoz and A.Y. She was signed by B’Hits Music Group and the following year, dropped her hit single ‘Closer’ which stayed at the top of the charts for 13 weeks. The song won the R&B song of the year. 

In 2017, Vanessa Mdee was signed by international music distributor Universal Music Group (UMG) and became the first African to land such a deal.  

In 2018, Vanessa Mdee launched her first album ‘Money Mondays’ which carries 18 tracks including 'Cash Madame', 'Money Mondays', 'The Hustle', 'Kisela' amongst others.

In 2019, Vanessa Mdee released 'That's For Me' featuring South African duo Distruction Boyz under Universal Music Group.

In 2020, Vanessa Mdee quit the music industry and described it as demonic as she said it didn't care about her emotional well-being. That said, Vanessa Mdee said she's open to attending shows.
